BUTTERFLY
Butterfly tells the intimate story of Shiva, a man standing alone on the edge of a bridge where his world fell apart. Two years earlier, this river claimed his young daughter, Chiara. A year later, his wife Madhu, unable to bear the crushing grief, ended her own life at the very same spot. Now Shiva returns, holding Madhu’s wedding ring, ready to follow them into the water and escape his pain forever.
As he prepares to jump, overwhelmed with tears, he takes out the ring—accidentally dropping his car key. At that moment, Agash, a passerby on a video call with his own mother, notices the key on the ground. Interrupting his conversation, he gently approaches Shiva to return it. From Agash’s phone, his mother’s worried voice cuts through the air: “Son, are you okay? I can’t hear you anymore.”
That simple question pierces Shiva’s darkness. For the first time in years, he remembers he is also a son—that his own mother would be devastated if he died. The echo of a stranger’s mother’s love becomes a lifeline. Instead of letting go, Shiva breaks down in tears, steps back from the edge, and chooses connection over despair—taking out his phone to call his own mother.
Butterfly is a moving meditation on grief, loss, and the power of human connection. It embodies compassion’s truest essence: even the smallest, unplanned acts of kindness—like returning a lost key or asking if someone is okay—can save a life. This short film calls on viewers to truly see those around them, act with empathy, and remember that no one is ever completely alone in their pain.

Director’s Statement / Intent:
With “Butterfly,” we set out to prove that compassion doesn’t require grand gestures. Sometimes, it’s a single, gentle act that can pull someone back from the edge. By telling this story, we hope to inspire others to pay attention to those around them, to choose empathy in small ways, and to understand that their kindness may become the reason someone decides to keep living.
